Summer Snapshots

I am linking up again for this week's Summer snapshots. This project has helped me remember to photo document our days. The fun, interesting things we do and the every day things. Not every day can be a vacation day or full of adventure. But I think part of my journey to contentment is learning to love and fully experience the magic of the ordinary days along with the spectacular ones.

Wednesday: We went to our church's annual Star-Spangled Fried Chicken Dinner. (Say that 10 times fast!) Isabella was in the children's parade with her girlfriend Ava.

Thursday: For lunch I made my favorite grilled cheese with fresh basil. Later that night I laced up my running shoes. I've been back to running for about 7 weeks now. It is just now getting to be something I don't have to talk myself into doing every time. When I finish I'm always glad I went.

Friday: We met friends at the Steak and Catfish barn. It was our first "experience" at the steak and catfish barn. I knew we were in for a real treat when we pulled up and saw the "man vs. food" sign! Later that night at home we made chocolate chip cookies with marshmallow filling. YUM!

Saturday: We went to Isabella's buddy Milo's first birthday party.

Sunday: Afternoon swimming!!

Monday: Headed out to a cookout with friends to celebrate the 4th!

Tuesday: Isabella and I went to story time. She looked on quietly while the books were read and watched the big kids.

That is just a glimpse into some of the things we did this week along with surviving the oppressive daily triple digit temperatures! Happy Summer!

"Do not give to dogs what is sacred; Do not throw your pearls to pigs" Matt. 7:6

Today I walked from the bathroom to the living room (this is not a long distance) with a pair of pearl stud earrings in my hand. I sat Isabella down on the living room rug and went to put on my earrings. When I opened my hand, only one was there. I did not hear the sound of one dropping on the wood floor or tile. Since then, I have torn up my house looking for it. I feel sick to my stomach about it. It's just stuff right? Except they are the pearls that Michael gave me for our first Christmas with Isabella. Our first Christmas as a family of three. My first Christmas as a Mom. I love them. They are so special and meaningful to me. They are simple and beautiful and I wear them all the time. Still just stuff, but meaningful stuff. If I don't find it, it doesn't mean I'm not still a Mom, or that our Christmas was not as magical as it was. Those things can't be taken away...but I would just like to find it! I certainly did not throw my pearls to pigs!
I emailed Tiffany's customer service to see if they will sell one pearl rather than a pair, but I doubt that is very likely. Let me know if you have any good searching tips.
I am considering the horror of mashing through Isabella's poop just to be sure it wasn't somehow swallowed...

Pool scavengers

We LOVE swimming and in the summer we are always looking for a place to swim to beat the triple digit heat in Oklahoma. Our pool/beach bag is always packed and ready to go with sunscreen, goggles, sunglasses, towels, and this year the addition of swim diapers and a baby hat!
This afternoon we swam at my uncle's house. Thanks so much Uncle Rich! We are well on our way to helping Isabella become a swimming fish just like us. And check out that wave we are loving so much! :) Have a fabulous 4th!

We went on a road trip today to southeast Oklahoma. I drove the 2 and half hours home while my loves slept in the back. I drove into the prettiest fluffy clouds and got lost in thought.

It was a rough day for Isabella and I yesterday. For some reason she was up and at 'em at 6:30AM yesterday after having slept until 8-8:30 most of the other days this week. She wanted me to hold her but then immediately wanted to get down. Nothing I did seemed to be the right thing. She was fussy, inconsolable, and exhausted so I put her down for her nap. Forty minutes later she was crying for me to come get her. This from my girl who's naps usually last about two hours. At this point, my patience was quickly depleting. We began more rounds of her wanting to be held, then immediately wanting down, followed by screaming whenever I walked away or left her sight. Exhausted, I eventually just put her in her crib (where she was contained) and went to finish getting ready.

She was only in there for about 5 minutes, but during that time she screamed continuously. While she was exercising her vocal cords, I thought for a second how nice it would be to be at a job, wearing pretty clothes, smelling nice (from a shower, perhaps a little perfume, and the absence of spit up on my person), with people who can talk and aren't screaming at me instead of being at home in a t-shirt with dried spit up stains on it, with someone who's only way to let me know something is not right is to scream at me. I thought about the pediatrician visit just last week where she commended me for staying home and told me it was a rare gift I was giving my daughter. She said that putting my career on hold for a few years would give my child years we could never get back. Even so, if we start having more days like this, I wondered how much of a gift it is if I have to put her in her crib for 5 minutes while I'm having a time out to pray for patience, kindness, and endurance.

Things got better in the evening and we made up with lots of snuggles before bedtime. I put myself to bed at 9:15. I don't think I've gone to bed that early since I was 10, but I was ready for some serious sleep. I laid in bed thinking how we had both just had an "off" day. People have asked if it is boring staying home, and my answer is always no, I love it. I do work about 6 hours every week and I always miss Isabella while I'm gone. I'm sure yesterday won't be the last time I will have the thought cross my mind that I'm not sure if this is what I want to be doing this very second. But last night, I laid in the dark knowing in my heart I am right where I want to be -- off days and all. Thankfully they are few and far between. I hope to see a tooth pop through soon for the work we both put in yesterday!

My friend came over in the afternoon and challenged me to a July challenge. We have set lots of goals together over the years and I am always up for a good challenge. Her goal didn't really speak to me, so I tried to come up with one that was fitting. I pondered many that I will save for another month, but the challenge came with the question "what would make the biggest immediate difference in your daily life?", and I knew what it would be. I have a much better attitude when I get up before Isabella is up and have some quiet time to myself to drink my fake coffee, read my bible or current book, count my gratitudes, and/or just sit quietly listening to the birds sing. So this month I will be setting my alarm to get up 30 minutes before the time she wakes up on average. There may be some days when she wakes way earlier than usual or I get too many wake up calls in the night and switch the alarm off to soak up as much interrupted sleep as possible and it just doesn't happen. But overall I hope this practice will give me an extra dose of grace to be the wife, mother, and friend I desire to be. Thanks for
the inspiration Michelle!

What would make the biggest difference in your life this month?

Nowakowski farms

Isabella and I made a trek out to the Nowakowski family farm this week. It was pouring down rain, dark, and I thought for sure we were lost a few times. But then I saw this sign:

And was relieved we had made it!

The corn was in a huge barn with lots of people at work preparing and bagging the corn.

We picked up two bags to share with my Mom and Sister and drove back home in time for morning nap.

Isabella napped and I bagged up 80 ears of sweet corn. We will eat a few this week and then freeze our bags to so we will have fresh sweet corn throughout the year. It is delicious!

9 months

My blue eyed girl.

9 Months old! Only three more weeks and she will have lived outside of my body longer than she did on the inside. Which is very strange to think about. On her birthday, I allowed the pang of sadness to wash over me in thinking about Isabella being 9 months now, sent Michael the "I can't believe our baby is 9 months!" text, and then moved on to how much we are enjoying her.

Over the last month she has really started moving all over the place to get to things she wants. Which is usually to press the buttons on the DVD player! She isn't getting up on all fours yet, but has begun trying. She has been attempting to pull up on things, but not with much success. At her 9 month appointment she weighed 17lbs 13oz and was 27 inches long, putting her in the 25th percentile. It was our first time to go to the doctor without Michael. I guess we are both big kids now! I did all the parts he usually does and entertained her for 50 minutes (!!!!) while we waited for the doctor to come in. This is no great task for a baby that is now mobile and just wants to go all the time. She now has two teeth, both on the bottom. She babbles a lot and likes to see how loud she can make her voice go. She became extra clingy over this last month, and even cuddly at times. She is so smiley and that has blessed us and a lot of people we see while we are out. I love seeing her many expressions and tiny glimpses of what her personality might be like.

On to our monthly zebra/chair pictures:

Getting quite boring.

MAKE IT STOP!

The wave.
Isabella started waving about a week ago. You would think our child just graduated from Harvard with the joy this new skill gives us!
Love you Isabella Grace!

Summer lovin' had me a blast...

Love, love Meg's Summer list found here. Seems like her list is popping up on several blogs I read. Great ideas of things to do with kids. Love the chalkboard and colors!

I love making lists, doing fun things, and making memories, and her list got me excited for all of the fun I will have with Isabella some Summer. But for now I am relishing our simple list of reading as much as we can, enjoying our morning play times, using our zoo pass, and swimming as much as we can.

Intently playing yesterday.

Rarr!

I asked Michael if there was anything special he would like to do for father's day. He said he would love to go to a movie. We rarely go to the movies these days, so it is a special treat. We went out to dinner, then home to put lovey to bed. My cousin kindly sat at our house while we went off to the movies and our baby slept. I had to text just once during the movie to see if everything was OK, and was relieved to get a "not a peep" text back. Other than the movie, my favorite thing about going to the movies in the Summer is when you exit the theater and the exchange from freezing to heat. It reminds me of youth group days and all the movies we saw in the Summer.

#25 on my 30 before 30 list: "grow herbs". We picked some up at the farmers market a few weekends ago and I just potted them today. I just got basil and cilantro. I was tempted by the rosemary and oregano, but I decided to go with two I knew we would use. I will be using the basil to make Oprah's favorite grilled cheese, and one of mine too. Although, I just use one type of cheese, whatever we have on hand. I'm not quite that fancy!

Zoo fun

Deep in thought- or melting in the triple digit heat.

First time to play in the water at the zoo

She liked it!

Chomping rocks.
She almost gave me a heart attack when she found a small rock and clamped it down in her mouth before I could get it out of her hand. Thank you Katie for pulling the rock from her mouth as I was stunned and trying to recall how to perform the Heimlich on an infant!

No doubts

I do not doubt that I married the right man for me. The boy I shared my high school days with and now the man I'm sharing parenting days with, is still the one for me. But you have no way of completely knowing what kind of parent your spouse will be until that day comes. The older we have become I have seen him grow into a more patient and less impulsive man, than the boy that avenged me by super-gluing plastic placemats on a ex's car. (Minus the time he broke into our house...but I suppose that was with good reason!)

I started seeing glimpses along the way as we started this journey. His excitement when we found out we were pregnant. His love and care making food I could tolerate, holding my hair back over the toilet, cleaning up the aftermath during those very sick days. When he wore pink to our ultrasound...because he "just knew".
And then on September 23rd when we spent the day in the hospital, he exhibited his strength and patience again and again. And late that night when I watched him hold our baby in his arms...and oversee everything that was done to her, I saw him become a Daddy.

If I had a quarter for every time since he has said "She is just perfect", "I just love her so much", etc. we would be rich. I have loved standing over her crib hearing his prayers for her. I have loved watching bath time and how much fun he has with her. I have loved watching them dance around the living room to "their" playlist.

Friday when he left for work, he stood at the door staring at us playing on the floor and said nostalgically, "Annaleise, these days with her are going by so fast...soak up every moment". I have needed his perspective when I've had a day of spit up, screaming, fussing, teething, etc. The days are flying, and I'm glad to have no doubts that my little girl has the best daddy. I have been blessed with a father who has left an eternal imprint on my life of his faith, love, and patient spirit. I am happy that Isabella will have the same!

Playing after dinner on father's day

After bath cuddles.

Isabella, I hope you know you have the most fun-loving, prayer warrior Daddy who is so in love with you! We are so blessed! Happy father's day!
